Making Tax Digital is coming for drivers

HMRC is moving self-employed income to quarterly digital updates. The threshold drops each year, so most full-time drivers will be in soon. Start now and you build a full year of clean records — and claim every cost — before it’s mandatory.

Thresholds phase in over three years. Source: gov.uk.

Built for the trades, not generic bookkeeping

The details that decide your bill — done properly.

Your CIS comes back to you

We track the 20% contractors take at source, so it lands as the refund you're owed the moment your return is filed.

Quote → invoice, no double entry

Win the job with a quote, turn it into an invoice in a tap, mark it paid — and it's already in your books.

Your van, claimed properly

Actual running costs or mileage — whichever's bigger — with capital allowances on the vehicle worked out for you.

Sole trader or limited company

We file the right way for how you trade, and your accountant can log in to review and certify before it goes to HMRC.

Everything a driver needs at tax time

  • Quotes that convert to invoices in a tap
  • Snap material, tool, fuel & van receipts
  • CIS deductions tracked → your refund calculated
  • Van claimed by actual cost or mileage — the bigger one
  • A correct tax estimate — National Insurance included
  • File to HMRC, or have your accountant certify it first

The correct-number promise

Your estimate includes Income Tax, Class 4 National Insurance and payments on account — the figures free calculators leave out. If wyse.tax ever miscalculates your tax from the records you approved, we'll fix it and work with you to put it right with HMRC.

Questions, answered

Why is your tax estimate higher than a free online calculator?+

Because ours is right. Self-employed drivers pay Class 4 National Insurance on top of Income Tax, and often payments on account too. Free calculators usually leave those out, so the bill looks smaller than it really is — until HMRC's does. We'd rather you saw the true number early.

Should I claim 45p/25p a mile or my actual van costs?+

Whichever gives you the bigger deduction — and we compute both for you. For high-mileage vans, real fuel, insurance, servicing and repair costs often beat the flat mileage rate. You pick one method per vehicle and we keep you to it, as HMRC requires.

Do I have to use Making Tax Digital yet?+

It phases in by income: over £50,000 from April 2026, over £30,000 from April 2027, and over £20,000 from April 2028. Even if you're not in yet, keeping clean digital records now means you claim every cost and switch over painlessly.

Do I file myself, or does my accountant?+

Your call — same books either way. If you're confident, file straight to HMRC from the app. If you'd rather have it checked, your accountant logs into the same portal, reviews the numbers we've prepared, certifies them, and it's filed. You never export to another tool.

I'm under CIS — how do I get my refund?+

Log what your contractor paid you and the CIS they deducted (or let us work it out from your labour and status). We total it up, set it against your real tax bill once your costs are in, and show the refund you're owed — ready to file.

Is my data safe?+

Your records are yours. Everything is stored securely, nothing is sold, and you can export or delete your data whenever you like.
